Born: November 5, 1890 in Yokohama Died May 25, 1975. Hiratsuka art historian and art critic. Graduated from the Department of English Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. Professor of Western art history at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, studied in Europe and the US from 1921 to 1925. Served as a lecturer at Harvard University, a visiting professor at various British universities, a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, director of its attached art research institute, a member of the Cultural Properties Protection Committee, and director of the Yamato Bunkakan Museum. Member of the Japan Art Academy in 1987, and a Person of Cultural Merit in 1970. His major works include Sandro Botticelli (1925), published in London, The Characteristics of Japanese Art (43), and Essays on Oriental Art.
