Yukio Yashiro

Born: November 5, 1890 in Yokohama
Died May 25, 1975. Hiratsuka art historian and art critic. Graduated from the Department of English Literature at Tokyo Imperial University. Professor of Western art history at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, studied in Europe and the US from 1921 to 1925. Served as a lecturer at Harvard University, a visiting professor at various British universities, a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, director of its attached art research institute, a member of the Cultural Properties Protection Committee, and director of the Yamato Bunkakan Museum. Member of the Japan Art Academy in 1987, and a Person of Cultural Merit in 1970. His major works include Sandro Botticelli (1925), published in London, The Characteristics of Japanese Art (43), and Essays on Oriental Art.

美術史家，美術評論家。東京帝国大学英文科卒業。東京美術学校教授として西洋美術史を担当，1921～25年欧米に留学。ハーバード大学講師，イギリス諸大学派遣教授，帝国美術院幹事，同付属美術研究所所長，文化財保護委員，大和文華館館長などを歴任。 62年日本芸術院会員，70年文化功労者。主著は，ロンドンで出版された『サンドロ・ボティチェリ』 Sandro Botticelli (1925) ，『日本美術の特質』 (43) ，『東洋美術論考』。
