Japanese: 八陣守護城 - はちじんしゅごのほんじょう

Bunraku puppet theater. Historical piece. 11 acts. Collaborative work by Nakamura Uogishi (Uogane) and Sagawa Tota. The original text is written as "Hachijin Shugojo". First performed at the Osaka Onishi Shibai in September 1807 (Bunka 4). It depicts the downfall of the Toyotomi clan due to the Tokugawa clan's schemes, focusing on Kato Kiyomasa's loyalty to Toyoe and the popular legend of his poisoning, and adds Sanada Yukimura's military strategist skills in the Siege of Osaka. The title "Hachijin" comes from the fact that military strategist Masaki Yukimune (Yukimura) laid out a plan of eight battles, and the guardian castle alludes to Kiyomasa's castle, Higo Honjo (Kumamoto Castle), as well as Kamo Tomokiyo (Kato Kiyomasa) protecting the castle for the young lord Haruwakamaru (Toyotomi Hideyori).

人形浄瑠璃。時代物。11段。中村魚岸(魚眼)，佐川藤太合作。正本では《八陳守護城》と表記。1807年(文化4)9月大坂大西芝居初演。徳川氏の策謀による豊臣氏の没落を，加藤清正の豊家に対する誠忠や毒殺の俗説を中心として描き，それに大坂の陣における真田幸村の軍略家ぶりを加えた。名題の〈八陣〉は軍師正木雪総(幸村)が八陣の計を敷くことに由来し，守護城は清正の居城の肥後本城(熊本城)を暗示するとともに，加藻朝清(加藤清正)が幼君春若丸(豊臣秀頼)のために本城を守護したことを表す。
