A general term for birds in the passerine family Laniidae, or one of these species. Birds in this family are 18 to 35 cm long. They have a strong hooked beak and sturdy legs with sharp claws, a large head, and a rounded body. They have a relatively long tail. The Laniidae family includes 25 species of shrikes distributed in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America, about 40 species of bush shrikes in Africa, and one species of the Bornean bush shrike. They live alone in pairs on forest edges, sparse forests, and sparsely wooded grasslands, perching on branches or posts with good visibility and keeping watch on the ground. When they find prey, they pounce and capture it with their beak or legs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
