...Capital of Rio Grande do Norte state in northeastern Brazil. Population 459,827 (1991). Located at the mouth of the Potenji River, it was built in the late 16th century as a fortress to protect against foreign enemies such as the French. It had no particular industry and was stagnant until the port was built in the 19th century. It is an excellent port located in the center of North and South America, and the shortest distance to Africa (2,990 km from Dakar in the Republic of Senegal), and is important from a geopolitical perspective and when considering naval control of the Atlantic Ocean.
