Annona squamosa (sugar-apple)

Japanese: バンレイシ(蕃茘枝) - バンレイシ(英語表記)Annona squamosa; sugar-apple
Annona squamosa (sugar-apple)
A semi-deciduous fruit tree of the Annonaceae family. Native to tropical America, but now cultivated in various tropical regions. It grows to a height of 5-6m. The leaves are elliptical-lanceolate, without sawtooth, and have translucent fine dots. The flowers consist of three yellow-green outer petals and three smaller inner petals, and there are many stamens and pistils. The fruits are aggregates about 7cm in diameter, and turn yellow-green when ripe. The flesh is soft, sweet, and aromatic, and contains a lot of protein and vitamin C. It is eaten raw, and is used in sherbets and fermented drinks. Because the flesh resembles the head of a Buddha, it is called Buddha's head or Shaka head. The same genus, soursop ( A. muricata ), has large fruits with fleshy thorns on the surface. The seeds contain alkaloids that are effective in causing tumors. Other plants in the same genus include cherimoya and tscherinnia, both of which are known as tropical fruit trees.
