Rengeshouma - Rengeshouma

A perennial plant of the Ranunculaceae family (APG classification: Ranunculaceae). The underground stem is thick and creeps horizontally. The stem is 30-80 cm tall. The leaves are large, 2-3 times trifoliate, compound, dull and shiny, and the leaflets have coarse sawtooth. From July to September, a sparse panicle is produced at the end of the stem, and 5-6 pale purple flowers, about 3 cm in diameter, open downward. Inside the large, conspicuous petal-like sepals are smaller petals with nectar glands. The fruit is a capsule, which ripens on a curved, upward-growing stalk and contains fluted seeds. It is a plant of one genus and one species endemic to Japan, growing in mountain deciduous broadleaf forests from Fukushima to Nara prefectures. The name comes from the fact that the flowers resemble lotus flowers and the overall appearance, including the leaves, resembles that of the citrus gracilis.

キンポウゲ科（APG分類：キンポウゲ科）の多年草。地下茎は太く、横にはう。茎は高さ30～80センチメートル。葉は大形の2～3回3出複葉で、鈍い光沢があり、小葉は粗い鋸歯(きょし)がある。7～9月、茎の先にまばらな円錐(えんすい)花序をつくり、径約3センチメートルの淡紫色花を5、6個下向きに開く。大きく、よく目だつ花弁状の萼片(がくへん)の内側に、それより小形で蜜腺(みつせん)のある花弁がある。果実は袋果(たいか)で、柄が曲がって上向きに伸びて熟し、ひだのある種子を含む。1属1種の日本特産植物で、山地の落葉広葉樹林内に生え、福島県から奈良県に分布する。名は、花がハスに似ており、葉を含めた全体のようすがサラシナショウマに似ることによる。
