Fenshui (English spelling)

Japanese: 汾水 - ふんすい（英語表記）Fén shuǐ

The second largest tributary of the Yellow River, flowing southwest through central Shanxi Province in the North China region of China. It is also called the Fen River. It originates from Mount Guantian in Ningwu County, turns west in Xinjiang County, and enters the Yellow River in Hejin County. Its total length is 716 km, and its drainage area is 39,400 km2. The annual flow rate varies greatly, with a difference of more than 100 times between flood and dry seasons, and it also contains a large amount of sand. In the middle reaches, it forms the Taiyuan Basin and the Linfen Basin, and in between them, the Lingshi Gorge is formed. The Fen River Valley, which connects to the Wei River Plain, is a rift valley that runs from northeast to southwest. It has been inhabited by humans since the Paleolithic period, and saw the early development of agriculture, playing a major role in the establishment of the Yellow River civilization.

中国，華北地区，山西省中部を南西に流れる黄河の2番目に大きな支流。汾河ともいう。源を寧武県管涔山に発し，新絳県で西に折れて河津県で黄河に入る。全長716km。流域面積3万9400km2。年間の流量変化がきわめて大きく，洪水期と渇水期では流量に100倍以上の差があり，含砂量も大きい。中流部に太原盆地と臨汾盆地を形成，その中間に霊石峡を構成する。渭河平原と接続する汾水の谷は，北東～南西の走向を示す地溝帯で，旧石器時代より人類が住み，早期に農業の発展をみるなど，黄河文明の成立に大きな役割を果たした地域である。
