The Cattleya genus has about 40 native species distributed in tropical America, and lives as an epiphytic plant on trees. However, these native species are rarely cultivated, and improved horticultural varieties and intergeneric hybrids are used as cut flowers and potted plants. It was discovered in Brazil in 1818, and the first flowered in England in 1824, and was named after the horticulturist of the time, W. Cattleya.
