[Died] April 30, 1900, Endenich, near Bonn. Hungarian painter. Commonly known as Mihály. Trained at the academies of Budapest, Vienna, Munich, Paris, and Düsseldorf. After 1872, he settled in Paris. With a semi-realistic, semi-academic style, he painted powerful genre paintings, landscapes, portraits, and religious paintings that were different from French realism, and became a representative Hungarian painter of the 19th century. His major works include Blind Milton Dictating Paradise Lost (1878, New York Public Library), The Drunkard (1878, Budapest Museum of Art), and Christ before Pilate (1881).

ハンガリーの画家。通称 Mihály。ブダペスト，ウィーン，ミュンヘン，パリ，ジュッセルドルフのアカデミーで修業。 1872年以後パリに定住。準写実的，準アカデミックな作風で，フランス的写実主義とは異なる力感にあふれた風俗画，風景画，肖像画，宗教画を描き，19世紀ハンガリーの代表的画家となった。主要作品は『失楽園を口述する盲目のミルトン』 (1878，ニューヨーク公立図書館) ，『大酒飲み』 (78，ブダペスト美術館) ，『ピラトの前のキリスト』 (81) 。
