Around 1320-80 Commander-in-chief of the French royal army during the Hundred Years' War. He seems to have been of low-ranking feudal lord status, but after the Treaty of Bretigny and Calais in 1360, he rebuilt the royal army, intervened in the factional conflicts in Brittany and Spain backed by England and France, and after the war resumed in 1369, he became commander-in-chief of the royal army in 1370 and led the war to a favorable outcome. This is a good example of Charles V's skill in recruiting talent, and he responded by adding mercenary troops that had become bandit gangs to the royal army during the truce and at the same time demonstrated his realist ability to deal with things.
