A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae). It grows on coastal cliffs and produces long, slender underground stems. The stems grow in clumps, are 30-40 cm tall, and are densely leafy all the way to the top. The leaves are thick, green on the upper side, and silvery-white with dense hairs on the underside. The flowers are usually numerous tubular flower heads that grow in corymbs and open from October to December. It is found along the Pacific coast from Inubosaki in Chiba Prefecture to Omaezaki in Shizuoka Prefecture. It is often cultivated because of its long flowering period and beautiful leaves. It has also naturally hybridized with cultivated chrysanthemums, producing various hybrids, some of which have been cultivated for a long time.
