German neurologist. Born in Oldenburg and died in Munich. He was one of the first researchers of hypnotism in Germany, and since 1886 has been involved in the study of parapsychological phenomena, particularly telepathy and mediumship. He conducted clinical experiments on a number of mediums, including the famous late-century medium E. Paladino. One of his experiments with medium W. Schneider (1922) was later reproduced in the short story "Mario and the Magician" (1930) by the writer T. Mann, who had also participated in the experimental meeting. [Tanemura Toshihiro]
