The first adaptation of this popular story into a Kabuki play was Otogibanashi Hakata no Imaori (Fairy Tale Hakata Imaori) by Segawa Jyoko III at the Nakamuraza in Edo in August 1852 (Kaei 5). This was followed by Tsukushikodan Namino Shiranui (Tsukushikodan Namino Shiranui) by Kawatake Mokuami at the Shintomiza in Tokyo in October 1875, and Tamakushige Hakozaki Bunko (Tamakushige Hakozaki Bunko) by Katsuno Susumu at the Ebisuza in Osaka in 1877. The final version was Kokubiyakuronoriwake Hakata (Black and White Thesis, Part 1 Hakata) at the Shintomiza in Tokyo in November 1882, in which Mokuami adapted the above work to be closer to Hakata Shinori.
