An excretory organ found in terrestrial arthropods such as insects, spiders, and millipedes. It is named after the Italian anatomist Malpighi. The Malpighian tubules consist of one to several dozen long, thin tubes (the number of tubes varies depending on the species), and are connected to a pair of excretory openings in the hindgut. It is known that in insects, the front half of the tube excretes ammonia in the form of potassium uric acid along with water, carbonate ions, potassium ions, etc., and the rear half reabsorbs water and potassium ions, and mainly excretes only crystallized uric acid into the hindgut.
