Monk Mokujiki - Table of Contents
A common name for monks who, after becoming monks, practice asceticism by not eating rice or vegetables, but only nuts and wild plants. Two particularly famous monks are: (1) Ogo (1536-1608) was a Shingon sect monk in the Warring States period. He was from Omi and his secular surname was Fujiwara. At the age of 37, he entered Mount Koya. When Toyotomi Hideyoshi attempted to attack Mount Koya in 1585, he negotiated with Hideyoshi and earnestly warned him against attacking the mountain. As a result, Hideyoshi converted him to his faith and treated him well. He was the founder of Seiganji Temple and Kosanji Temple, and excelled in poetry. (2) Gogyo (1718-1810) was a traveling statue-making monk in the late Edo period. He was from Kai and his name was Myoman. His secular surname was Ito. He entered the Buddhist priesthood at the age of 22, and at the age of 45, he received the "wooden precept" and kept it for the rest of his life. He made a vow to create 1,000 wooden Buddha statues, and from 1773 he traveled around the country, leaving behind unique wooden Buddha statues in various places. He is often called the same as Enku, but is known for his rounded, curvaceous expressions and gentle smile. Others include Iku, Yoa, and Giko.
