A specialized sensory nerve ending located in the superficial layer of the skin of the palms and soles, near the boundary between the epidermis and dermis. It is about 0.08 mm x 0.5 mm in size and senses touch. It is also called a tactile corpuscle. The main components of this corpuscle are the peripheral parts of myelinated AII type fibers, which are among the thicker of the sensory nerve fibers distributed in the skin, and a group of lamellar cells surrounding them in 5 to 10 layers. Within the corpuscle, the nerve fibers become unmyelinated and repeatedly meander and branch, but are always densely covered by lamellar cells.
