Vollard, Ambroise
Born: 1865. Saint-Denis, Reunion Island
Died in 1939. A Parisian art dealer and print publisher. He aspired to be a naval surgeon and lawyer, but later worked for a Parisian art dealer before going independent in 1893. He championed the avant-garde works of the time, including those by Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Rouault, and Vlaminck. He organized exhibitions such as the Cézanne exhibition in 1895, the Nabis exhibition in 1899, and the Picasso exhibition in 1901, and became a promoter of modern art.
