[Elegance and Conflict]
Furyu originally meant a gorgeous design, and in the Heian period, the term was used to refer to the extravagant designs used in interior decorations and oxcart decorations, but eventually came to refer mainly to the singing and dancing in festival parades (nerimono), as well as the props and costumes used in festivals. This furyu was absorbed into Ennen-gei, which was incorporating various performing arts, and from around the mid-Kamakura period, Ennen-no-Furyu developed into a theatrical performance with a set plot in the Ennen setting. There are two types of Ennen-no-Furyu: Dai-Furyu and Ko-Furyu, which have in common the fact that the plot progresses through dialogue, but Dai-Furyu features large-scale props and ends with bugaku, while Ko-Furyu features no significant props and ends with a simple dance.

　風流とは元来，綺羅をつくした意匠といった意味で，平安時代には室内の装飾や牛車の装飾などにこらされた華美な意匠を風流と呼んでいたが，やがて主として祭礼の練物（ねりもの）の歌舞(囃し物)や，同じく祭礼の際の作り物や仮装などの呼称となるにいたる。その風流がさまざまの芸能をとりこみつつあった延年芸として吸収されたわけであるが，その風流が延年という場において鎌倉中期ごろから一定の筋書を備えた劇形態の芸能として発展したのが延年の風流なのである。この延年の風流には大風流と小風流があり，せりふによって筋書が進行する点において共通するが，大風流は大がかりな作り物が出て，舞楽で終わり，小風流はさしたる作り物も出ず，最後も単なる舞で終わる。…
