The Story of the Metropolitan Police Department

Japanese: 警視庁物語 - けいしちょうものがたり

This Toei series depicts the steady investigative activities of detectives while skillfully combining sociology through crime with film studies that aim to fictionalize reality. A total of 24 films were made, from The Metropolitan Police Department Story: Five Minutes to Escape in 1956 to The Metropolitan Police Department Story: Missing in 1964. All screenplays were written by Hasegawa Kimiyuki, a former member of the Metropolitan Police Department's Criminal Identification Division. However, there was also the excellent 1955 film The Dead Beauty on the Last Train (directed by Kobayashi Tsuneo), based on an original story by a group of Asahi Shimbun reporters covering the Metropolitan Police Department, which, although not titled The Metropolitan Police Department Story, can be considered the actual first film.

刑事たちの地道な捜査活動を描きつつ，犯罪をとおしての社会学と現実の虚構化を目ざす映画学とを巧みに一体化させた東映のシリーズ。1956年《警視庁物語･逃亡五分前》から64年の《警視庁物語･行方不明》まで，計24作つくられた。いずれも脚本は警視庁鑑識課出身の長谷川公之による。ただし，1955年に朝日新聞警視庁担当記者団の原作による秀作《終電車の死美人》(小林恒夫監督)があり，〈警視庁物語〉のタイトルはついていないが，これを実質的な第1作とみなすことができる。
