Kaminoho [village] - Kaminoho

Japanese: 上之保[村] - かみのほ

A village in Mugi County, central Gifu Prefecture. Population 2,691 (1995). A mountain village located in the upper reaches of the Tsubo River, a tributary of the Nagara River. Apart from lowlands in the river basin, most of the village area is mountainous and has become severely depopulated. Agriculture has shifted from rice cultivation to field cultivation, and local specialty production of tea and shiitake mushrooms is thriving. Tea in particular is shipped as Tsubo tea. The mountain forests that make up most of the village area produce high-quality cypress lumber, and there are many sawmills and woodworking shops. There are many Enku Buddha statues in the shrines and temples in the village. [Ueda Masako]

岐阜県中央部，武儀郡の村。人口2691(1995)。長良川支流の津保川上流域に位置する山村。河川流域に低地があるほかは，村域の大部分は山地で，過疎化が著しい。農業は米作中心から畑作栽培に転換され，茶，シイタケの特産物生産が盛ん。特に茶は津保茶として出荷される。また，村域の大半を占める山林では良質のヒノキ材を産出し，製材所や木工所が多い。村内の社寺には多数の円空仏がある。【上田雅子】
