Japanese: 公現祭 - こうげんさい（英語表記）Epiphania

Along with Easter and Pentecost, Epiphany is one of the three oldest Christian holidays. It is a day to commemorate the coming of the Magi (kings) from the East, the baptism of Jesus, and Jesus' first miracle at Cana. It is celebrated on January 6th. It was originally celebrated in the eastern part of the Roman Empire as the birth of Christ, but as Christmas (→Christmas Day) on December 25th was introduced from the West, it came to celebrate the baptism of Jesus. Around the end of the 4th century, Epiphany was adopted by the Western Church, where the coming of the Magi was emphasized in contrast to Christmas, and it became popular, especially among the Germanic peoples, as the day of the coming of the Three Kings.
