Blanket - mōfu (English spelling)

Blanket - mōfu (English spelling)

A type of woolen fabric and a type of bedding. It is also called a blanket or quilt. It is made by felting plain weave, twill weave, double weave, double weave, etc., and then brushing both sides to create long naps. It is a thick fabric with excellent heat retention, and is light and soft to the touch.

The standard size is 155cm wide and 195cm long, while the large ones are 200cm wide and 225cm long, and weigh between 1.8kg and 4kg. The raw materials used are high-quality merino wool, coarse winter wool, camel hair, cotton, and chemical fibers such as rayon, acetate, acrylic, and vinylon. Some blankets use cotton yarn for the warp and a cotton/wool blend for the weft. Blankets using cotton yarn for both the warp and weft have excellent moisture absorption and heat retention properties, making them suitable for infants with soft skin. Synthetic fiber blankets are light and warm, but have poor moisture absorption and heat resistance, so it is important to know their properties and use them with care when used by infants and the elderly. Blankets using wool or camel hair should be treated to be insect-proof and stored with insect repellent. Originally, there were line blankets, which had a camel-colored background with horizontal stripes woven in dark brown thread on both ends, and floral blankets, which had floral borders woven into them. In recent years, more modern designs have become common, with blankets that are all-over patterned, plain white, or plain colored. Colors include camel, gray, red, pink, and white. Blankets were imported into Japan along with Western culture in the early Meiji period. It was after World War II that blankets began to be commonly used in daily life as bedding.

In addition to being used as bedding, blankets are also used as shoulder covers, lap covers, kotatsu covers, etc. They are also used as saddle covers.
