Sicilian School - Sicilian

This refers to a group of poets active at the Palermo court of the Kingdom of Sicily in the first half of the 13th century, where the arts and sciences flourished thanks to the active cultural promotion policies of King Frederick II, who was also Holy Roman Emperor. The name comes from Dante's Treatise on the Vulgar Language. They sang courtly love themes intelligently and skillfully in canzone and other forms, modelled on Provencal vernacular poetry, but their greatest achievements were in separating poetry from music and inventing the sonnet form. More importantly, they were the first to elevate vernacular Italian to a literary language and use it in poetry, and the history of Italian literature usually begins with this point. The main poets were Giacomo da Lentini, Pier della Vigna and Guido delle Colonne.
