There were many peddlers in Kyoto and Osaka selling komamaki (kelp rolls) made by wrapping herring around the sea, fried konbu, and konbu snacks called mizakara. In the Tokaido-chu Hizakurige, mizakara sellers appear at the boat docks of Fushimi, and in the Mita-kyo Monogatari (1781), they are described as "selling manju (buns) and mizukara (spicy dried fish)" in playhouses. ...
