Cylindrical stone products

Japanese: 筒形石製品 - つつがたせきせいひん

A type of stone product from the Kofun period, it is tubular and slightly thicker at the bottom. It is 5-9cm high and 3-4cm in maximum diameter. A bag-shaped hole runs vertically from the top, and the bottom is usually finished with a convex or flat surface. Some have ridges around the sides. Most are made of jasper, but occasionally quartz. Fewer than 20 kofun have been excavated nationwide, but all are dated to the 4th century, and most are located in the Kinai region and eastern Japan. In terms of the number of pieces excavated from each coffin, there are cases where there was only one, and cases where there were multiple pieces, with the highest number being five from Shinzawa Tomb No. 500 in Kazu-cho, Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture.

古墳時代の石製品の一種で，下底部がやや太くなった筒状を呈する。高さ5～9cm，最大径3～4cm。上面から縦に袋状の孔をうがち，底面はふつう凸面や平面に仕上げる。側面に突稜をめぐらせるものがある。ほとんどが碧玉製で，まれに水晶製がある。出土古墳は全国で20基に満たないが，いずれも4世紀代に編年され，そのほとんどが畿内および東日本に所在する。1棺あたりの出土数をみると，1個の場合もあれば，複数個を数える場合もあり，奈良県橿原市一（かず）町の新沢（しんざわ）500号墳の5個を最高とする。
