Born September 17, 1944 in Bressanone, Italy. Mountaineer and polar explorer. Inspired by his father, he began climbing various mountains in the Alps at the age of 13. In the 1960s, he became one of the strongest advocates of the "alpine style," a new climbing method that reduces the weight of equipment and does not rely on outside support such as sherpas. In 1970, he successfully reached the summit of Nanga Parbat (8,126 m). In 1975, he climbed Gasherbrum I (also known as Hidden Peak, 8,068 m) in the Karakoram Mountains, becoming the first person to summit an 8,000-meter peak in the alpine style without oxygen. In 1978, together with Peter Habeler, he became the first person in history to reach the summit of Mount Everest without oxygen, the world's highest peak, and in 1980, he achieved the summit alone without oxygen. He subsequently summited K2 (8,611m) in 1979 and Cho Oyu (8,201m) in 1983, and was the first man in the world to traverse Gasherbrum I and II (8,035m) in 1984. In 1986, he achieved the unprecedented feat of conquering all 14 of the world's 8,000m peaks. Furthermore, in 1990, he became the first man in the world to successfully cross Antarctica (via the South Pole) on foot.
