A plan to prevent flooding and ensure safety in the delta region in southwestern Netherlands. On the night of February 1, 1953, a storm caused the Rhine, Maas (Meuse) and Scheldt delta regions to burst their dikes, causing a major flood, resulting in extensive damage including 150,000 hectares of flooded land and 1,835 deaths. The Delta Commission, which was established immediately after the disaster, recommended that the islands in the delta region be closed off with dikes, leaving access to the ports of Rotterdam and Antwerp. The Delta Act was passed in 1958, and the implementation of the plan and its budget were decided.
