…The founding of the Brahma Samaj is generally considered to have occurred when RM Roy founded the Brahma Sabha in Calcutta in 1828. The Brahma Sabha, which worshipped a single, intangible, and omnipresent God, rejected idolatry, and advocated universal faith, saw its activities stagnate after Roy's arrival in England (late 1830). In 1843, however, it was revived when Devendranāth Tagore (1817-1905) led 20 young men through the initiation ceremony. It was Tagore who actually organized the Brahma Samaj and established the theological foundation of the Brahma faith. …
