The capital of Suriname, located in northern South America. It is a port city located on the left bank of the Suriname River near its mouth, which flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It started as an Indian settlement, and was settled by the French around 1640, but in 1651 a British colony was established here. It became a Dutch colony in 1816, and developed rapidly after World War II. It became Suriname's capital when it gained independence in 1975. Its main industries are tourism and commerce, and it is especially known for beer brewing. Many of the buildings that line the wide, grid-like streets are made of Dutch-style wooden architecture, and the city is home to the University of Suriname (1968), the Suriname Museum, library, botanical gardens, and government building. The historic district of the city, which shows a fusion of European architecture, including Dutch, and South American architectural techniques and retains traces of the colonial era, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2002. The railway station and international airport are located in the southern suburbs. Population: 242,946 (2004).

南アメリカ北部，スリナムの首都。大西洋に注ぐスリナム川の河口に近い左岸に位置する港湾都市。インディオの集落として始まり，1640年頃フランス人が入植したが，1651年ここにイギリス植民地が建設された。 1816年以降オランダ領となり，第2次世界大戦後急速に発展。 1975年スリナム独立とともにその首都となった。主産業は観光業と商工業で，特にビール醸造で知られる。格子状に設計された広い街路に沿って並ぶ建物のなかにはオランダ風の木造建築が多く，市内にはスリナム大学 (1968) ，スリナム博物館，図書館，植物園，政庁舎などがある。オランダなどヨーロッパ建築と南アメリカの建築技術との融合がみられ，植民地時代の面影を残す市街歴史地区は，2002年世界遺産の文化遺産に登録。南郊に鉄道始発駅と国際空港がある。人口 24万2946（2004）。
