The Great Fire of Edo in 1772 (An'ei 1). It was one of the three biggest fires in Edo after the Great Fire of Meireki. A fire broke out at Daienji Temple on Gyoninzaka in Meguro in the early afternoon on February 29th, and fanned by strong southwesterly winds, it spread to Azabu, Shiba, the castle town, Kyobashi, Nihonbashi, Kanda, Hongo, Shitaya, Asakusa, and other areas, reaching Senju, and finally being put out in the evening of the following year's New Year. A fire also broke out in Maruyama-cho, Hongo, on the evening of the 29th, and burned Komagome, Yanaka, and Negishi. The area that burned was 6 ri (about 24 km) long and 1 ri (about 4 km) wide, about one-third of Edo, making it the longest distance a fire has traveled since the Edo period.
