Born: 1397. Florence [Died] 1482. Florence, Italian astronomer, geographer, and physician. Studied medicine, mathematics, and astronomy at the University of Florence and the University of Padua. In Padua, he became friends with Nicholas of Cusanus. After practicing medicine, he became director of the Florence Library. He had a wealth of knowledge about the East through his reading, and he advised King Afonso V of Portugal that there was a sea route to the East that was shorter than the Cape of Good Hope route (1474). A few years later, he drew a map of the world showing a new route, which influenced Columbus' discovery of the Americas. He built a sundial on top of the dome cathedral (68), and used its meridian to correct the Alfonso tables and determine the variation of the ecliptic. He also made many observations of comets and recorded their changes in position.
