Russian novelist. Born into a Moscow merchant family, he studied natural sciences at Moscow University. He joined a radical group, was arrested and exiled, then released and began his career as a writer. He is a representative writer of the Neo-Realist movement, which aimed to combine realistic and fantastical elements. His works include Sisters of the Cross (1910), The Fifth Evil (1912), and The Tale of the Fall of the Land of Rus (1918), but even after his exile in Paris (1921), he continued to write works such as Whirlwind Russia (1929) and In the Rose-Colored Glow (1952). While influenced by Gogol and Dostoevsky, his unique style, which is based on folklore motifs and style and incorporates the techniques of symbolic poetry, influenced Zamyatin and others.
