1840‐1912 British female doctor. Born in Hastings. Studied at Queen's College, London in 1858, and served as a mathematics tutor there for several years. In 1865, she travelled to the US to study medicine, but returned to Japan after her father's death. In 1869, she completed her medical studies at an off-campus lecture course at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Edinburgh. She fought throughout her life to officially admit women to university medical schools, and to open the medical profession to women. She worked hard to open a medical school for women in London in 1874. [Kawamura Sadae] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
