This dating method utilizes the phenomenon in which ⁸⁷ Rb, a radioactive isotope of rubidium, decays to ⁸⁷ Sr, an isotope of strontium, with a half-life of 4.88×10 ¹⁰ years. It is effective for dating tens of millions of years ago. The ⁸⁷ Rb/ ⁸⁶ Sr ratio is uniform in magma, but since the way Rb and Sr are absorbed differs for each mineral during the process of forming igneous rocks from magma, the ⁸⁷ Rb/ ⁸⁷ Sr ratio varies for each mineral. Due to this difference in the ⁸⁷ Rb/ ⁸⁷ Sr ratio, ^{the 87} Sr/ ⁸⁶ Sr ratio, which was the same for all minerals when igneous rocks were formed, will differ for each mineral over time as ⁸⁷ Rb decays to ⁸⁷ Sr.
