[1] 〘名〙① 目の中央の黒い部分。黒目。※塩原多助一代記（1885）〈三遊亭円朝〉一「女が髪乱打振(ふりがみぶっ)て眼睛(メグロ)まわしてほっこりきゑッたって云やんすから」② 鮪(まぐろ)の小さいもの。めぐろうお。〔日葡辞書（1603‐04）〕※俳諧・類船集（1676）安「安房〈略〉目黒かつほ」③ ミツスイ科の小鳥。メジロ科のメジロに似るが、やや大きく、全長約一三・五センチメートル。背面はオリーブ色で、顔から腹面は黄色を帯び、眼の周囲をおおう黒斑がある。小笠原諸島特産。森林性で昆虫食。[2][一] 東京都二三区の一つ。昭和七年（一九三二）東京市に編入された荏原郡目黒・碑衾(ひぶすま)の二町が合併して成立。武蔵野台地の一部をなす目黒台・荏原台にある。関東大震災後、住宅地として発展。東京大学教養学部・東京工業大学などがある。[二] 東京都目黒区の地名。旧荏原郡目黒町。昭和七年（一九三二）東京市に編入。上目黒・中目黒・目黒・下目黒などに分かれ、江戸時代から大正末期にかけては筍(たけのこ)の産地。目黒不動・蛸薬師（成就院）・祐天寺・円融寺などがある。
