1863‐1944 British critic and novelist. He studied classics at Oxford University. He became an editor of the magazine Speaker, but in 1912, when the English department was established at Cambridge University, he became its first professor. He was based on Victorian good sense and gained popularity for his fresh writing style. His critical works include The Art of Writing (1916), The Art of Reading (1920), and three volumes of Literary Studies (1918-29), and he compiled the Oxford English Poetry Anthology (1900). Under the pen name Q, he published fairy tales such as The Town of Troy (1888) and The Starry Boat (1897), as well as Selected Short Stories (1921), which were based on his hometown of Cornwall.
