Arthur Thomas Quiller-Couch

British critic and novelist. He studied classics at Oxford University. He became an editor of the magazine Speaker, but in 1912, when the English department was established at Cambridge University, he became its first professor. He was based on Victorian good sense and gained popularity for his fresh writing style. His critical works include The Art of Writing (1916), The Art of Reading (1920), and three volumes of Literary Studies (1918-29), and he compiled the Oxford English Poetry Anthology (1900). Under the pen name Q, he published fairy tales such as The Town of Troy (1888) and The Starry Boat (1897), as well as Selected Short Stories (1921), which were based on his hometown of Cornwall.

イギリスの批評家，小説家。オックスフォード大学で古典学を専攻。雑誌《スピーカー》の編集者になるが，1912年ケンブリッジ大学に英文学科が開設されると，初代教授になる。ビクトリア時代の良識を支えにし，清新な文体で人気を博す。批評作品に《文章の技法》(1916)，《読書の技術》(1920)，《文学研究》3巻(1918‐29)があり，《オックスフォード英詩選集》(1900)などを編纂。〈Q〉の筆名で《トロイの町》(1888)，《星の舟》(1897)などの童話，故郷コーンウォールに取材した《短編選集》(1921)を発表。
