A scholar or a disciple of a powerful family in the Han and Six Dynasties period in China. Those who studied the Taigaku or Kokugaku schools were called Shosei, while those who studied under a scholar were called Monsho or Menin, and were registered in a list of their teachers. A special personal relationship developed between scholars and their disciples, and scholars would give advantageous recommendations to their disciples when they sought official positions, and disciples were sometimes punished for their work. In opposition to scholars and bureaucrats who built up influence by having many disciples, even powerful families and eunuchs began to have many disciples, and this became a measure of their power.
