Japanese: 慈訓 - じくん
Jikun - Praying for the Lord
Year of death: Hōki 8 (777)
Year of birth: Jitō 5 (691)
A monk from the Nara period. Also called "Jikin." He was from the Funa clan, a clan of immigrants from Tanbi County, Kawachi Province (Habikino City, Osaka Prefecture). He was related to Dosho, a monk who went to China. He entered Kofuku-ji Temple and studied Hosso and Kegon doctrine. After serving as a Kegon lecturer and a lecturer at the Imperial Court, he served as a Zen master caring for Emperor Shomu when he died in 756 (Tenpyo Shoho 8), and was exempted from the duties of his parents and appointed as Shosozu. Around this time, he lived in Tonoshima-in, within Hokke-ji Temple, which had a connection with Empress Komyo, and apparently served as the head priest of Kofuku-ji Temple, the clan temple of the Fujiwara clan. He had a close relationship with Fujiwara no Nakamaro, and was forced to resign after the collapse of Nakamaro's government, but with the fall of Dokyo, he was made Shosozu again in 770 (Hōki 1). <References> Sakuma Ryu, "Research on the Biographies of Ancient Japanese Monks"
