?-1671 Sultan who established the most powerful Islamic state in Philippine history. Around 1619, he became chief (datu) of the Maguindanao people on the island of Mindanao. Around this time, the Maguindanao people were the target of attacks by the Spanish who were trying to conquer Mindanao, and in 1637, their capital Lamitan was occupied. However, Kudarat soon not only wiped out the Spanish influence from Maguindanao, but also subjugated the coastal areas of Mindanao from Sibugay Bay in the west through Ilana Bay to Davao Bay in the southeast, as well as the Islamic tribes living inland around Lake Lanao and in the upper reaches of the Pulangi River, and rose to the throne of Sultan. He established the largest sultanate in Philippine history and prevented the Spanish from advancing into Mindanao. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
