Fujima Kanbei - Fujima Kanbei

Japanese: 藤間勘兵衛 - ふじまかんべえ
Fujima Kanbei - Fujima Kanbei

Founder of the Fujima school of Japanese dance.

First World

(?-1769) Born in Fujima Village, Iruma County, Bushu (Saitama Prefecture) (present-day Kawagoe City). He moved to Edo during the Hoei era (1704-11) and became a dance teacher, later taking the name Fujima Kanbei and becoming a theater choreographer. He is said to have originally been a disciple of Nakamura Denkuro I. He is also recorded as a nagauta and singer at the Morita-za in the winter of 1758 (Horeki 8). One of his main choreographic works is "Hashiratate."

II

(?-1785) He was the son of the first generation and is thought to have taken the name in 1772 (An'ei 1). His choreographic works include "Kumo Hyoshimai" (Spider Beat Dance) and "Migawari Oshun".

III

(?-1821) He started out as an apprentice at a fish wholesaler, but became the husband of the adopted daughter of the second, and is thought to have taken the name in 1790 (Kansei 2). In 1798 he left the Kanbei family and took the name Fujima Kanjuro, but in 1819 (Bunsei 2) he reverted to his old name. He was active as a renowned choreographer, producing works such as "Shiokumi" and "Shitadashi Sanbaso". After the death of the third, his wife took over as the fourth, and he left theater choreography thereafter. It is said that the family continued as female town masters up to the ninth generation, but it is unclear. In 1931 (Showa 6), the third Fujima Kan'emon (the seventh Matsumoto Koshiro) took the name Kanbei, which caused a dispute with the Kanjuro family, but the following year Kan'emon returned to the drawing board. In 1989, an agreement was made to protect the Kanbei family name between the Kanjuro and Kan'emon families.
