Sawah (English spelling)

Japanese: サワ（英語表記）sawah

A word meaning "paddy field" in many Indonesian languages, including Indonesian, Malay, and Javanese. Paddy field cultivation in Indonesia has a long history, especially in the volcanic foothills of Java and Bali, where a unique rice-growing culture has developed. It is believed that the productivity of paddy rice cultivation was the material basis of many of the dynasties that rose in this region after the 7th century. The development of river irrigation in Bali is also known to have been accompanied by the development of a unique water user community called subak.
