Kurobe Gorge

Japanese:
Kurobe Gorge

A gorge upstream from Unazuki Onsen on the Kurobe River, which flows through eastern Toyama Prefecture. As the Kurobe River divides the northern part of the Northern Alps into the Tateyama mountain range and the Ushiro Tateyama mountain range, the difference in elevation between the summit and the valley floor is 1,500 to 2,000 meters, forming the deepest gorge in Japan. As a tourist destination, Kurobe Gorge stretches from Unazuki Onsen, where the Kurobe Gorge Railway runs, to Keyakidaira upstream. In this area, there are hot springs such as Kuronagi Onsen, Kanetsuri Onsen, Meiken Onsen, and Babadani Onsen. Upstream from Keyakidaira and downstream of Kurobe Dam is Shimonoroka, and its central area is the S-shaped Gorge, Juji Gorge, and Hakuryu Gorge. This route was surveyed by the Japan Electric Power Company around 1935 (Showa 10) and is a climbing route on the left bank along a cliff 100 meters below the base, making it difficult for ordinary tourists to explore. The other main tourist spot in Kurobe Gorge is the Kurobe Dam area. From Higashizawa Valley upstream from Kurobe Dam there is the "Upper Corridor," which has no mountain path and is a route only for climbers who cross the riverbank and rapids. The "Lower Corridor" has been designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty and a Special Natural Monument.
