Megalopolis (English spelling)

Japanese: メガロポリス(英語表記)Megalopolis
Megalopolis (English spelling)
A city in the Arcadia region of ancient Greece. In Greek, it means "large city." It was founded by Epaminondas of Thebes between 370 and 362 BC as the center of the Arcadian League against Sparta, and many Arcadians migrated here. Unable to endure the oppression of Sparta, they sought help from Athens, but were unable to find it. They eventually turned to Macedonia, and in the 4th century BC, they sided with Macedonia throughout, but after the death of Alexander III (the Great), they became independent. After the abdication of the tyrant Lydiadas in 235 BC, they joined the Achaean League, and Philopoemen became a general of the league and opposed Sparta, which did not play a leading role in the league, but they did not do much after that. The historian Polybius was from this town. Excavations have uncovered a meeting place (the tersilion) and a theater.
