In Greek mythology, Amalthea is a female goat or nymph who fed the baby Zeus on Mount Idea in Crete. To protect the baby Zeus from his father Cronus, who was about to swallow him, Amalthea is said to have hidden him in the shade of a tree and had the Curetes make a fuss so that his crying could not be heard. This goat was a descendant of the sun god Helios and was feared by the Titans. When Zeus later fought the Titans, he is said to have made his armor Aegis (meaning "goat skin") from Amalthea's skin. It is also said that when the goat's horn was broken off, it was filled with all kinds of fruit. This is the origin of the horn of plenty (cornu copiae).
