Megalukaya - Megalukaya

A perennial grass of the Poaceae family. Also called Karukaya. The culms are clumpy, about 1 meter tall, and hairy. From September to October, the culms bear pseudo-panicle inflorescences with bracts at the top. The spikelets bear two florets in pairs, and at the base of the spikelets are two pairs of sterile involucre spikelets, each 0.8 to 1 cm long. The stalk spikelets are smooth and glabrous. The stalkless spikelets are fertile, leathery, yellowish-brown hairy, and have awns about 5 cm long. It grows in sunny hills and grasslands, distributed from Honshu to Kyushu. The basic species is widely distributed in East Asia, India, and Africa. The name was given to it in response to the male cutting grass, Ogarukaya (male cutting grass), because it is smaller and cuter.

イネ科の多年草。カルカヤともいう。稈(かん)は株立ちし、高さ約1メートル、長毛がある。9～10月、稈頂に、包葉がある仮円錐(えんすい)花序をつける。小穂は小花2個が、対(つい)をなして小花穂につき、その基部に不稔性(ねんせい)で長さ0.8～1センチメートルの総包状の小穂が2対ある。有柄小穂は平滑で無毛。無柄小穂は稔性で革質、黄褐色毛があり、長さ約5センチメートルの芒(のぎ)がある。日当りのよい丘陵地や草地に生え、本州から九州に分布する。基本種は東アジア、インド、アフリカに広く分布する。名は、オガルカヤ（雄刈萱）に対応して、それよりも小形でかわいいため、つけられた。
