Yoshishige Abe

Japanese: 安倍能成 - あべよししげ
Yoshishige Abe

Philosopher and educator. Born in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture. Graduated from the Faculty of Letters, Tokyo Imperial University in 1909 (Meiji 42). After serving as a professor at Hosei University, studying in Europe, and as a professor at Keijo Imperial University, he became the principal of First High School during the Second World War and was praised as a great principal. After the Second World War, in 1946 (Showa 21), he became the Minister of Education in the Shidehara Kijuro Cabinet. He later became the director of the Imperial Household Museum (now the Tokyo National Museum) and the president of Gakushuin. He translated and wrote about Western philosophy, and at one time wrote literary criticism, influenced by Natsume Soseki. A staunch liberal, he is known for calling on America to approach Japan with "justice and truth" rather than force in a speech welcoming the first American educational mission to Japan after the Second World War (1946). His major works include "A History of Western Ancient and Medieval Philosophy" (1916), "A History of Western Modern Philosophy" (1917), and "Kant's Practical Philosophy" (1924).
