Zorrilla - José Zorrilla

Zorrilla - José Zorrilla

Spanish poet and playwright. Born in Valladolid. His representative play, Don Juan Tenorio (1844), features a protagonist typical of the Romantic era, who is guided by the power of true love to obtain God's forgiveness and salvation. By the time of the premiere of The Shoemaker and the King (1840), which established his position as a playwright, he had published eight books of poetry, including the lyrical Poems of the East, and his long historical poem Granada (1852), which portrays the glorious vision of the Islamic world. He showed greater talent for narrative than lyricism, and was a national poet who sought subject matter from the history and legends of his own country, and gained popularity as a national writer for themes that aroused the nation's interest and musical, resonant prose. He died in Madrid.
