...He devoted his life to the promotion of Kyoto Kiyomizu ware and the development of Nitten pottery, and developed his own style and glaze tones, such as Sansai Ryuyo, Gengama, Sasoi, Shiranoi, Kobanoi, Kokisai, and Ginpaku. Incidentally, the Shimizu family was founded in 1771 (Meiwa 8) by Kuritaro, a disciple of Ebiya Seibei, who built a kiln in Gojozaka, Kyoto, taking the name Ebiya Rokubei and assuming the name Gusai (1738-99). It was followed by the second Seisai (1790-1860), the third Shoun (1822-83), the fourth Rokukyo (1848-1920), and the fifth Rokuwa (1875-1959). The surname Shimizu was used by the third generation. ...
