Megaron (English spelling)

Japanese: メガロン（英語表記）megaron

Architectural term. A rectangular residential building style consisting of a main room with a central hearth and a porch in front of it. Its origin and formation are unclear, but it has existed in Central and Eastern Europe since the Bronze Age, and its oldest example in Greece is at Dimini. In Mycenaean citadels, the megaron was the center of the king's residence. Many Greek homes were built in the megaron style, and the naos of early Greek temples was also based on this style.

建築用語。中央に炉をもつ主室とその前のポーチとから成る長方形の住居建築形式。その由来と成立については明らかでないが，中部および東ヨーロッパにはすでに青銅器時代から存在し，ギリシアではディミニにその最古の例がある。ミケーネ時代の城塞内においてはメガロンが王の居所の中心になっていた。またギリシアの住居の多くはメガロン形式で建てられ，初期のギリシア神殿のナオスもこの形式によっている。
