A social organization formed in 1912 with the aim of reforming Islam in Indonesia. Since then, it has continued to carry out various activities as an organization promoting the modernization of Islamic society. The founder of the organization was a religious official of the Yogyakarta royal family named Dakhuran, but later, under the leadership of Fakhruddin, it gained supporters among Islamic merchants in cities on the north coast of Java and throughout West Sumatra, and expanded in response to "Pan-Islamism." In addition to religious schools in the strict sense, it also developed various social movements "in accordance with the teachings of the Koran," such as opening educational institutions for general education, orphanages, and clinics.
